The girl asks her Grandpa who is coming. He said it doesn't matter. He fires a shot. Joe flies off his horse to the ground. The Grandpa tells Joe that he has the young boy in his site. If he doesn't throw the gun down, he will shoot. Joe throws the gun down.

The Grandpa calls Joe a claim jumper. Joe tells the Grandpa, that he's a Cartwright and it's his property. He let's Joe & Jamie go & tells him to stay off his claim.

Carrie tells her Grandpa, she kinda' likes the big one. She says he's kinda' gentle. The head back to the cabin, because it's time to eat. Joe tells Jamie, that he bets the Grandpa has lots of friends. Joe is being sarcastic. Carrie and her Grandpa are going back to the cabin. The Grandpa falls down the hill and gets hurt. Joe gets him in bed and gets the Grandpa some Irish whiskey. Joe leaves Jamie with Carrie to care for the Grandpa. Jamie tells Carrie that it'll be a while before Joe gets back. They should watch the Grandpa in shifts. Jamie tells Carrie that he's never seen a girl like her. Doesn't she ever wear a dress? She is dressed in overalls.

Carrie's aunt and uncle come to see Beauford (Grandpa). They tell him that they best take Carrie with them, since he is hurt. Carrie is crying, she doesn't want to leave her Grandpa. She asks him if he is gonna die. Grandpa says of course not. He is going to take her to see the ocean. Beauford tells Carrie that they are family and she's gonna have to make the best of it, for a little while, till he's on his feet again.

The aunt and uncle tells Jamie, that they don't think Beauford is gonna get better. He looks really bad. The Doc tells Joe, he is right about his ribs & that he may be bleeding inside. Joe gives Beauford some more Irish whiskey. Joe tells Beauford that he will draw up a paper to say he will protect his claim, so no one else can work it, while he is sick. Beauford tells Joe that he better not double-cross him, or he can still shoot him.

Joe and Jamie come to take Carrie to see her Grandpa. Her aunt refuses to let her go. Joe gets disgusted and sighs deeply. Carrie's aunt tells her to get to the wood. Carrie refuses. She is upset that she can't see her Grandpa. The aunt locks her in the shed, with the rats. Carrie is terrified & starts crying.

Joe and Jamie see the Doc. They ask Doc how Beauford is. Doc says that Beauford wants to live, because of Carrie. He keeps calling her name. Joe tells Doc that the Owens won't allow Carrie to see her Grandpa. Jamie rides back to see Carrie. The Uncle refuses to let Jamie see Carrie. Jamie waters his horse before he leaves. He hears Carrie crying.

Jamie tells Carrie he will get her out. Carrie asks Jamie to go get Joe. He will know what to do. Jamie sneaks back and breaks the padlock on the shed. Jamie tells Carrie to run. She falls to the ground & says she can't run. Jamie says “Girls” and sighs.

Joe and Pa are eating supper. Hop Sing gets upset, because Hoss doesn't show up for supper. He starts talking in Chinese. Joe starts mimicking him and lets out one of those cute little laughs that he is famous for.

Ben is at the store and sees a pretty blue dress. The store owner asks Ben if the dress is for Hoss or Little Joe. Ben says, “Can't you just see Hoss in this dress?” *LOL* Pa is planning on asking the store owner (Clara) to take in Carrie. The uncle comes to get Carrie. Jamie stands in front of Carrie to protect her. The uncle picks up Jamie & throws him out of the way. Joe comes running up from behind & hits the uncle. He beats him up......YEAH JOE!!!  Joe tells the uncle she is going nowhere, so he best get on his horse and get out of here. The uncle starts to punch Joe. Joe knocks the uncle to the ground. The uncle tells Joe, the law will not be too happy about this. Joe says Carrie better not go see her Grandpa after this happened.

Ben gets home. Joe comes downstairs and asks him how Carrie's grandpa is. Ben says he is much to sick to see anyone. Pa tells Joe the sheriff can have him arrested for kidnapping and assault. He says that Carrie has to go back to the Owens. The Owens bring Clem to the Ponderosa. The aunt tells Joe they won't press charges if he lets the girl go home with them. Ben tells Joe and Jamie how sorry he is, but she has to go back.

Carrie has run away. Hoss and Jamie find Carrie at the cabin. They talk her into going back with them. Hoss tells her that Joe will go to jail if she doesn’t go back. She agrees. She has a soft spot for Joe........but don't we all.  :-)  Carrie wants to see her Grandpa. Pa tells Hoss that he died an hour earlier.

Joe figures out all the Owens want the claim. Joe tells them that the Cartwright's get 90% of the claim and they get 10%.  The uncle says that they can't live on that, even without the girl. Joe makes a deal with the Owens. They get 10% and no Carrie. They agree. Joe said take it or get nothing. Jamie is happy. Joe tells Pa the deal he just made. Pa tells Joe that he sure is his father's son.

Jamie tells Carrie she never has to go with the Owens. She is upset about her Grandpa dying. She wants no help from anyone. Jamie tells her that he was like her in the beginning. When his Pa left him, he said there was no one worth talking to, for a long time. Carrie busts into tears & falls into Jamie's arms. Carrie is leaving with Clara. She is wearing the pretty blue dress that Ben saw. Joe tells Carrie to come back and see them. Carrie says how about next Sunday? Hoss tells her that if Hop Sing knows someone is coming, he'll make something special. She tells Hoss bye and proceeds to kiss Joe. Jamie is upset at seeing this......until she reaches down and kisses him on the cheek. Ben tells Clara that if she ever needs anything. She tells Ben she has everything she needs right here, meaning Carrie.

REVIEWS:

“Even though this was mainly a Jamie episode, I thought it was very good. Very few people like Jamie (not Mitch Vogel; he is a sweety). I thought it was wonderful the way that Jamie went to any length to protect & help Carrie. It also makes me sick the way, that the Owens’ only wanted Carrie when they thought, she could make them rich. They basically sold her to get 10% of the claim. I am very glad they did, because these people are the scum of the earth. Carrie will be much better off with Clara. She will be wonderful to her. I also thought it was pretty cool that this episode aired on my 10th birthday.”  Lindy

“I liked the way Joe took care of Carrie in this episode. I always thought this was one of the few episodes where we got a glimpse of what Joe would be like as a father. He was very protective of Carrie, and yet related to her by doing things like telling her the story of the invisible friend he had. And of course Carrie preferred Joe over Jamie!  Choose a gawky boy with brillo-like red hair or a hunky man with dreamy curly brown hair? That wasn't even a contest!” Susan Grote

“I agree! Who would want Jamie when given the choice? The Cartwrights should have sent Jamie to the evil relatives and kept the little girl.” Robin

“I remember the scene at the end of this episode where Joe and the family make eye contact when Jamie practically stumbles when Carrie kisses him on the cheek after kissing Joe.  He plays the young nervous teenager quite well.  I will say the later Bonanza episodes seemed to focus on the torment and hardship of others.  Due to the times, they were much more realistic with their characters. You know, they seemed more believable.” Nancy

“I agree with Susan, he <Joe> did treat that girl so sweetly. And for once it showed Hoss and Joe as big brothers with Jamie. Nice interaction between all three in this one. Like those behind Jamie's back looks Joe and Hoss gave each other. Like "right, Jamie, I remember being your age with a young girl".”  Jan
